Gluten Free Colors Explained

Spoonful’s gluten-free scanner identifies gluten- or possible gluten-containing ingredients in packaged food products. We display scan results in a simple green, yellow, red icon system so you can quickly get the advice you need.

Green: This product is likely gluten free as we did not detect any gluten-containing ingredients or ingredients that pose a high risk for cross-contamination.

Yellow (US only): This product may contain gluten. You’ll want to tap on the highlighted ingredient to learn more.

Yellow (Non-US): This product has no natural gluten-containing ingredients, but there are ingredients present that pose a high risk of cross-contamination.

Red: This product contains gluten. We will highlight gluten-containing ingredient in red, so they are easy to decipher.

Gluten-Free Claims & Certifications

Some of the green products you scan will have different icons based on whether or not the item has a claim or certification. Here’s a quick look at the different possibilities.

In this case, the Fritos product does not have any gluten-containing ingredients, but we were unable to find an additional claim or certification from Frito Lay. The middle product by Enjoy Life, however, does provide a gluten-free claim, either on the packaging or on the brand’s website. Sensible Portions has gone a step further and gotten a gluten-free certification from a reputable organization. Thus, we show the mark and identify as such.
